Nizami Baala

In this article, Baala Nizami (a 23-year-old feline parent) shares her struggles dealing with ear infection in one of her cats, her experience with the olive oil home remedy, and what caused her to schedule an appointment with the VET and get recommendations for the best cat ear cleaning solution!

My identity as an ‘ailurophile’ can be confirmed by the fact that I’ve been parenting cats since a 6th grader in St Paul’s Girls’ School, Hammersmith.

I was never a cat fancier until my daddy left us to grab that job opportunity in Australia, and mama purchased me a ginger and white British Shorthair kitty (whom we call ‘Shomzi’)… so that I miss my expat dad less, and have leisure with the kitty when missing those Daddy-friendly times.

To your surprise, at the time of writing this article, I am parents to three friendly-yet-moody British Shorthair cats – Shomzi, Popo, and Malo. Shomzi is the head in charge of the other two juniors, but they seldom do obey her… Hahaha!

A few glimpses of Shomzi when she first joined our family as a 2-week old kitten!

Okay… Okay… Thanks for appreciating my white-box photography skills ?

glimpses of Shomzi

Ok now let’s get to the main topic… that’s “Cat Ear Cleaners”.

Understanding every feline owner’s concern when it comes to buying a cat ear cleaning solution, I have shared my hands-on experiences on dealing with inflamed, mite-infested, and wax-clogged ears using the best vet recommended and/or over-the-counter cat ear cleaning solutions.

Why Should You Care?

Though a cat is a low-maintenance pet, there are some scenarios where it still needs your help to stay clean and healthy. Ears are often neglected when it comes to cat grooming. Excessive wax buildup in a cat’s ears leads to the development of fungal, bacterial, and yeast infections inside ears which may wreak havoc to the cat’s overall wellbeing.

So that’s where cat ear cleaners come in!

Readily available in sprays, fluids, wipes, and lotions – these medicated cleaning solutions remove wax accumulation; eliminate fungi, bacteria, and ear termites; and prevent the build-up of debris inside the ear canal as well as offer protection against ear infection.

My Story with Cat Ear Cleaning

My first kitty’s ears always got a lukewarm reception from me.

Seriously, I never watched those ears.

Until one day while playing with Shomzi in the deep sunlight, I noticed a massive wax buildup a few inches deep into her right ear canal.

And the left ear canal? Jeepers Creepers, it’s accumulated with wax as well! ?

Inspecting the wax nuggets inside my pet cat's ears. Eww! Yuck!
Inspecting the wax nuggets inside my pet cat’s ears. Eww! Yuck!

Ahh… so I finally found out the cause of those abnormal head tilts and shakes. Shomzi was giving me those signals of discomfort for 2 weeks, but how dumb of me to wrongly assuming it as something else.

As one would expect, I Googled the condition and found so many over-the-counter cat ear cleaning products and the legendary Olive Oil home remedy as a remedy to this problem.

Since I wasn’t sure about the usage of commercially-available ear cleaners and the unexpected complications with their misuse, I initially decided to opt for the all-natural treatment – that is Olive Oil – to treat my kitty’s ears.

The Olive Oil Experience

I always have ready access to the Olive Oil, and I guess that’s pretty obvious in a home with a DIY beauty maven mom… lol, sorry mom for disclosing your anti-aging secret ?

olive oil
It’s me with my Olive Oil bottle… *evil eyes off my beauty (haha, just kidding)

As said on WikiHow Pets and the Spruce Pets:

➤ I luke warmed some Olive Oil.

➤ Placed my cat Shomzi on my lap. She is a high-spirited cat, so I had to caress her for several minutes to calm her ludic soul.

➤ I added two drops of Olive Oil directly into the kitty’s ear canal, followed by a gentle massage at the base of the ear to work the liquid around.

*Shomzi wasn’t happy with the process and did a great deal of head shaking.

➤ It took her several minutes to calm down, after which I repeated the same procedure with the second ear.

➤ In the end, I used a soft cotton cloth to wipe the outer ear walls clean and rewarded the kitty with her favorite Chicken-flavored treats by Purina. She definitely deserves them for being a good girl!

Here’s me caressing my kitty and offering her favorite chicken treats as a reward after the olive oil treatment. Every feline parent should do this to make the cat feel relaxed after any sort of treatment.

Results Of Using Olive Oil For 2x Weeks

I continued using olive oil on alternate days for two weeks.

Cats are moody, so they are going to resist the treatment.

Especially my Shomzi, who got smarter with each application ??, and always did those laid-back-ear hisses when approaching her for the ear nursing.

cat
Oh, so she hissed at me (surely a heartbreak moment for a feline parent)… Shomzi, it’s all for your well-being, please understand!

Even when not using, she still used to stare at the object of her ire (i.e olive oil bottle) from a distance… Haha! ?

Even today the idiot, including Popo and Malo as well, or should I say the 3 idiots ? … are unable to understand that the olive oil enriched ear nursing is for the sake of their wellbeing.

cat
My cat Shomzi after seeing the olive oil bottle… OMAE WA MOU SHINDE IRU! (haha)

Ok, let’s get down to the business.

So I used olive oil on alternate days for two weeks. I guess two weeks’ application of this DIY remedy grants me enough experience to let my readers understand what to expect with this DIY cat ear wax treatment.

Describing in simple words, I would say:

“IT WORKS. IT IS BENEFICIAL. IT DOES NURSE THE EAR. IT DOES HELPING IN DISLODGING THE EAR WAX.

but…

TAKE IT AS A REGULAR CAT EAR MAINTENANCE PRODUCT, and not something that bestows instant results or relief from the ear infection.”

Within a few days of usage, I noticed small debris of ear wax loosening out of the kitty’s ears. The abnormal head shaking was significantly reduced. And apart from the pre-treatment reluctance by the feline – stress relief and mood enhancement were other post-treatment benefits that I noticed along with the ear nourishment effect.

But don’t consider it as the sole solution or instant remedy to the problem.

For example, if you have a cat with massive wax-clogged-ears, inflammation, or ear mites – you simply can’t rely on Olive Oil to give your cat complete relief from acute or chronic ear disorders. It does not provide an instant result.

And assume, even if you keep using it… it might take several weeks to bring your kitty’s ears back in their pristine condition.

So while Olive Oil does help in treating several ear infections in cats, it’s best to be used as a routine ear maintenance product to inhibit the growth of ear wax, keep ear diseases at a bay, or treat minor complications. For quick and instant relief, you have to go with the best over-the-counter or vet recommended cat ear cleaning solutions.

? In Quest For The Best Cat Ear Cleaners

Since I didn’t find olive oil a fast curing agent for my cat’s ears, I began a quest for the best commercial ear cleaners.

A simple Google search on “the best cat ear cleaners”, brought me hundreds of Top 10, Top 20 type blog posts – leaving me in a state of confusion…

which product to choose???

is the product safe to use on my cat???

Plus, many other questions.

sad face

And that’s something obvious, considering one is a conscious parent like me who always goes deep into the nitty-gritty of formulated or chemicals-inside products – be it cat food, medicine, or personal care products.

With everyone claiming a different product best for the said purpose, I had no choice but to visit a local VET to treat my feline’s ears with the best vet recommended cat ear cleaning solution.

? Getting Recommendations From The VET

Dr. Halime Bamsi has been Shomzi’s go-to vet for the last 3 years. My first appointment with her was in August 2018, when I approached her via PetsBeast for a 1-on-1 meeting regarding Shomzi’s wax clogged ears.

Halime Bamsi
Dr. Halime Bamsi (my go-to vet) pictured with my kitty Shomzi… proud to have such a stylish, caring, and professional VET!

I found her very nice and friendly. A true professional, she is very compassionate when working with animals, has superior manual dexterity than most other vets I have come across, and an additional perk… she has her clinic in my vicinity.

And TBH, I don’t know why, but there’s always inner peace and satisfaction when getting my kitty medically inspected and treatment by ma’am Halime ?.

Here’s Dr. Halime Bamsi (VET) inspecting my cat Shomzi’s infected ears.

My VET Recommended Me This Cat Ear Cleaner

After a thorough inspection of my cat’s ears, Dr. Halime prescribed Doggie Dailies Pet Ear Cleaner to be used on a first-priority basis. It is produced in the U.S.A. at the FDA Registered, GMP Compliant Center and is APHIS examination passed.

Doggie Dailies Pet Ear Cleaner is the best VET-recommended ear cleaner for cats.

This ear wash is made with herbal ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel, Tea Tree Oil, and Echinacea which combine to remove dirt, wax, and debris from your pet’s ears. Dr. Halime said that it is also effective in the battle against ear infections and ear termites in both pet dogs and cats.

My Experience With Doggie Dailies Pet Ear Cleaner

Since Dr. Halime’s clinic has a small VET pharmacy as well with a ton of high-quality medicines, so I got these ear cleaners straightway.

It was a small 8 oz bottle with a dropper and the billing slip attached to Shomzi’s cage card shows me that a small bottle cost me $12.47.

But that was a few months back…

Today I guess it costs anywhere between $16 and $17, but I am pretty sure you can still score a discounted deal on various online pharmacies and marketplaces such as Amazon or eBay.

Using The Ear Cleaner:

The ear cleaning solution had a nice talcum powder scent which I am 100% sure will not discomfit you or your cat. At least I and my cat Shomzi didn’t feel even a pinch of discomfiture at all. It was all nice and soothing.

The bottle had an easy-to-use applicator tip that made it administering ear drops and cleaning my cat’s ears far easier.

I felt a bit nervous when administering these drops for the first time. I had those terrible olive oil dispensation feelings. But to my surprise…

Unlike olive oil, Shozmi loved these ear cleaning drops. She did shake her head a bit, but was perfectly fine and relieved back to her normal condition after those few seconds of head shaking.

No hissing… no stress. It’s Shomzi after being administered with Doggie Dailies (vet-recommended) ear cleaning drops.

The Results?

I used Doggie Dailies Pet Ear Cleaner, twice a day for one week straight as recommended by my VET.

Considering the massive wax stones inside my kitty’s ears, I was expecting at least 2-3 weeks of regular application. But to my amazement, the ear wax in my cat Shomzi’s ears got eliminated within the first week of medical application.

Yes, you heard it right! That years old wax was all go, went, gone in less than 7 days. Even a double take put me to shame (considering I was thinking to get the results in no less than a month ?)!

It felt as if the ear cleaning solution has cast Harry Potter’s vanishing spell here *pun intended.

The strange part was that I didn’t know when and where those ear wax stones were cleaned out of the ears of my cat. Most probably they got flushed out in the garden because Shomzi spends most of her time there. Otherwise, it’s impossible for the wax to go unnoticed in our super tidy home’s white marble flooring.

Those assumptions apart, the Doggie Dailies Pet Ear Cleaner worked wonders in dislodging the ear wax and restoring the ears back to their cleanest condition.

Conclusion:

My doctor’s recommended cat ear cleaning solution – Doggie Dailies Pet Ear Cleaner worked TERRIFIC!

It was warmly accepted by my kitty, the credit goes to its side-effect-free soothing formula and that pleasant talcum fragrance.

The application results were outstanding. Cat’s wax-clogged ears got free of wax in less than a week. The feline got instant relief from the itchiness.

Also, my doctor told me that Doggie Dailies Pet Ear Cleaner is applicable to dogs and puppies of all sizes as well.

Why Buy A Cat Ear Cleaning Solution

Depending upon your feline’s grooming practices and living environment, you might or might not require to cleanse its ears. Many cats are superb at grooming themselves and also hardly ever need ear treatment. Others are not as great with their grooming abilities, or are prone to unclean ears, and also require routine ear cleanings to protect against infection, wax buildup, mites, and inflammation. If you observe extreme wax, debris, or other particles, in or outside the ear then it’s surely a time for proper ear cleaning.

Routine cleansings, as well as normal at-home checks, can find ear problems quicker, enabling timelier therapy options. If you believe your feline is having ear trouble (for example, if she is scratching her ears with paws or shaking her head), call your vet immediately or get started with using cat ear treatment medicines. Ear cleaner keeps wax in control and also develop a healthy and balanced ear setting so ear infections, yeast, fungi can not hold. Even if your pet cat does not have regular ear problems, it’s ideal to keep an ear cleaner in the first aid kit.

Proper treatment decreases the chances of developing chronic troubles, hearing loss, and also can minimize pain your feline might be experiencing. Topical options eliminate wax as well as debris by reaching deep right into the ear canal, while wipes are a quick option for periodic ear cleaning.

Important Features to Consider

Picking the appropriate cat ear cleaner for your pet should not be truly challenging especially if a certain brand’s product has been recommended to you by your vet. However, in circumstances when you wish to purchase a feline ear cleaning medicine without consulting your veterinarian below are a couple of factors you need to bear in mind.

Type of cleaner. There are four kinds of cat ear cleaners — fluid, lotion, sprays, and wipes. Anyone of the four kinds might have medicines to deal with fungi, yeast, microorganisms, or ear termites.

Fluid options or liquid ear washes are the most common. They enter deeper into the ear canal than the other three kinds and effectively fight against internal infections caused. The liquid needs to be dispensed directly inside the cat’s ear, after which you have to delicately massage at the ear’s base, and clean away the excess solution. As soon as you release the cat, she will possibly shake his head, which better loosens up and also eliminates particles from the ear.

Sprays aren’t usual, yet they’re easy to use. The spray loosens up ear wax so it can be cleaned away.

Ear cleaning lotions are usually made to deal with specific problems like yeast or ear mites. They’re usually used after a liquid ear washer has eliminated ear wax and debris.

Ear wipes are quick, easy, and mess-free than a fluid or lotion, however, they can just clean the outer base of the area, or as far you can reach your finger into the ear.

Alcohol content and hydrating. Alcohol is a common ingredient in ear cleaners. It helps in separating wax and debris, after which it quickly evaporates. Due to its quick dissolve function, it can dry the ears, triggering inflammation and irritation. Therefore, seek a formula that also consists of aloe vera or other hydrating active ingredients to neutralize the drying out impact of any type of alcohol material.

Purpose. While it holds true that an ear cleaner for cats is developed particularly to clean your cat’s ears, you might additionally wish to take into consideration various other objectives too. As an example, do you require medicine that has a deodorizing property or maybe an antimicrobial product? Is there swelling in your feline’s ears that require to be attended to or do you just need a formula that wipes away wax buildup in the ear canal?

Safe ingredients. The product you use should be effective so that your kitty’s ear problems will go away and it should be safe as well, so as not to cause additional problems for your kitty and also compatible with sensitive cats. In this regard, products with all-natural ingredients provide the best solution when it comes to safety. They are effective, too, but you’d have to wait a bit longer for the results to show up.

Black discharge in the ears is usually an indication of ear mites’ infestation inside the cat’s ears. The black compound is a combination of ear wax, blood, debris, and the ear termites themselves. It looks like coffee grounds in its texture. Your pet cat might shake her head or scrape at her ears if ear mites exist.

Why do my cat’s ears get so dirty?

Cats have ear wax similar to human beings. A small percentage of brown ear wax is common. However, if it begins to accumulate, your pet cat might obtain an infection from yeast, fungi, or bacteria.
