Do I need to brush my dog’s teeth?

Yes, you do. Gingivitis and tartar can advance to another stage called periodontal disease, or even form dental abscesses. These infections can spread systemically to other major organs, including the heart valves, the liver, and even the kidney. So it becomes very important that pet parents learn to keep routine management, monitor their pet’s mouth, and regularly brush his teeth.

What is dental disease and what causes it in Dogs?

The process starts when bacteria, food, and saliva combine to form Plaque. If plaque isn’t removed by brushing or chewing, it reacts with minerals to form a hard yellow substance called Tartar.

As the tartar builds up on the tooth and under the gums, the bacteria causes gum inflammation known as Gingivitis. The bacteria can then invade around the tooth and into the soft tissues and bone, leading to loose teeth, infections, and pain.

How to Prevent Dental Disease in Dogs?

ToothBrushing – the best way to reduce dental disease. It can take a while to get your pet used to having their teeth brushed. So find a toothbrush size that works for your dog and tasty pet toothpaste, that your pet loves.

Dental Care Diet – In general, these have a unique kibble texture that removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surface as your pet chews. Both prescription and non-prescription dental diets are available.

Dental Chews & Bones – If your dog uses dental chews and bones correctly, they can actually do a lot. The way it works is through the mechanical scraping of the tooth surface, removing plaque and tartar similar to brushing.

Long-lasting dental treats are best, because the longer your pet chews on it, the more of the brushing action they get. Keep in mind, these only work when your dog chews on both sides of the mouth against each surface of every tooth.

Mouth Rinses & Water Additives – There are some great antibacterial mouth rinses available, which can either be applied directly into the mouth or soaked onto the toothbrush. You can even use them on a cloth or a little cotton tip and wipe down the teeth.

Water additives won’t reverse a dental disease that your pet already has, but they can help to slow the growth of bacteria and help freshen the breath.

Dental Toys – Just like chews, dental toys work by mechanically removing plaque from the tooth surface as they chew. Dental toys are often flavored and they usually last a little bit longer than an edible treat.

A yearly scale and polish at your vet – This is recommended for every pet, but it is particularly important for cats and those dogs who don’t tolerate having their teeth brushed, as well as those dogs that don’t eat dry food. Your vet will perform a full scale and polish under general anesthesia, and really clear out any tartar under the gum line.

Human ToothGel Vs Dog ToothGel: Is human toothpaste safe for dogs?

Most human tooth gels include fluoride sodium lauryl, sulfate, and Xylitol, which are extremely poisonous to dogs if swallowed. Dog’s tooth gel has special enzymes that help to break down the tartar or plaque from the teeth. They come in poultry or beef dog, friendly flavors which are the best options to start with.

How to brush a dog’s teeth?

  1. Kneel or sit beside or in front of them
  2. Get them prepared – take your finger and start rubbing it onto their teeth and gums slowly. This will make them used to the feel of something rubbing against their teeth.
  3. Put some toothpaste, let them sniff and taste it. Let them lick it off your finger to get used to the taste and texture of it. If after a few days, they stop licking it, then it’s time to try a new flavor.
  4. Lift their lips to expose their teeth and gums. Start gently brushing their canines and gently shift to the molars. Massage gum line and clear away plaque. Don’t brush the teeth vigorously as you do yours. Then move to the upper molars.
  5. Just need to do the outside of the teeth, and it works pretty quickly. The tongue will take care of what’s on the inside. So we don’t need to worry about that, which makes it a lot easier to clean the teeth.
  6. Reward them once you are done with brushing. Reward them with their favorite treat for being such a good dog. Or you can also give them chew bone or toys that are made to clean teeth.

Should I clean the inside of my dog’s teeth?

If you can get the insides great, but if you can’t, then don’t stress. Their coarse tongue keeps that area clean. Secondly, 96% of tartar is actually on the outside of the teeth, so that’s what we want to focus on.
